These eight cities count as metros from FY 2026-27, so up to 50% of basic can be exempt. Elsewhere it's 40%.

Before you change how you pay

    • HRA exemption only exists under the old tax regime. Anyone on the new regime gets nothing from rent, so all of it should go in the other person's name.
    • Each of you can only claim rent you actually pay. Pay your share from your own bank account, keep monthly receipts, and ideally have both names on the rent agreement.
    • If one person pays more than ₹1 lakh a year in rent, their employer will ask for the landlord's PAN.
    • Exemption is the lowest of three amounts: the HRA you receive, rent minus 10% of basic, and 50% of basic (40% outside the eight metros). This tool tests every split against all three.
    • Tax saved includes 4% cess but not surcharge, and assumes your slab doesn't change. It's an estimate to plan with, not tax advice; check with your CA before filing.
